Helendale 2013 Community Service Awards Handed Out

The Helendale Community Service Awards for 2013, were held on January 25, 2014 at the Silver Lakes Association Clubhouse with a Mardi Gras theme entitled, “The Many Faces of Volunteers”. It was all about naming the Man/Woman/Student/Couple and Business of the Year with CSA Chair Julie Garland as Mistress of Ceremony, supported by the Helendale Chamber of Commerce President Tom Kirk and SLA Ledger/Shopper News Editor and KQTE Radio Personality, Jaime Earl.

The community of Silver Lakes nominated people whom they thought deserved any one of those titles with a CSA Committee of 10 selecting the top three in each of five categories and then later, by secret ballot choosing a top recipient per category.

Each of the top recipients received $500 for a local charity of their choice, plus the student received a $1,000 scholarship. The top recipients are: Man of the Year, Spencer Thompson; Woman of the Year, Marta Kraemer; Student of the Year, Marisa Ratchford; and Couple of the Year, Bill and Jodi Dodson.

African Violet Show and Sale Held at Spring Valley Lake

Spring Valley Lake’s annual African Violet show and sale was held on Saturday, September 28, to the delight of those who love the beautifully-colored plants.

Adelia Barbee, of Spring Valley Lake, and Jeanne DuPuis, of Victorville found some good African Violet plants to take home.

Organizers of African Violet sale included Millie Reavis, Yoko Cox, Mary McCool, Pat Seymour and Victoria Flores.
