Horse Derby Raises Funds for Hesperia Police Activities League

Hesperia Police Activities League (PAL) held their annual fundraiser dinner at the Percy Bakker Center on March 19. A Hobby Horse Derby was the theme, with six contenders (sponsors) in the race. A roll of giant dice determined which horses could step towards the finish line. Attendees “bet” on horses and at the end traded their chips for prize tickets. The Hesperia PAL program gives at-risk High Desert boys and girls age 11-18 a chance to learn character and confidence through participation in athletic competition. Established in 2008, the program is supported by grants, local citizens and area businesses. The value of athletic competition has proven to be immense, reinforcing the concepts of respect, self-discipline, personal responsibility, and citizenship. Deputy Gerri Navarro, director of operations since 2012, runs the day-to-day operations of the program, is at the gym working out with the youth, makes home visits and coordinates the activities of the program. Lt. Matt Schilling has been involved with the program since 2009. Race horses were sponsored by Advance Disposal, New Breed Martial Arts, Shear Realty, A-Tech Transmission, Kiner Law, and Pasco’s Pizza. Hesperia PAL is supported by grants and donations from those wanting to help adolescents become responsible adults in our community. To get involved in the program, contact Sergeant Linzy Savage at the Hesperia Police Department at (760) 947-1500. Donations to Hesperia PAL are tax-deductible, as a project of the High Desert Community Foundation.
