Jettin' With Jazzie ~ August & Sept. 2014

Flip For Life

Jasmine Barnett has been battling cancer for over a year now but in the meantime has managed to organize with Bitsy South and Nina Hart “Project Jasmine.”

On August 23, 2014, we held our 1st Annual Car/Bike/Fashion Show to raise funds for our local gymnastics team Silver Lakes Gymnastics Flyers and Breast Cancer Research. It was a great success thanks to all the sponsors:

Photography by Hart, GA Peach Tax Service, Klasikos Car Club, Wolfpack MC, HD Dueces MC, Bella Rose Boutique, Joelle’s Mobile Beauty, Diva Dolls and Ross Elite. That’s right many of the sponsors are locals here in Silver Lakes and what better way to give back to the community then to help our youth.

The models that graced the stage were our local gymnast and pin up dolls. Top Hat Barber Shop even came out and did free haircuts to donate to hair to children with hair loss.

This event really gave the girls a boast and made them feel special which is what Project Jasmine is all about; helping our upcoming generation prepare to deal with life’s challenges in a wonderful way and through fun and laughter.

We hope to see you all next year, as it will be bigger and better.

Jasmine Barnett is a mother, a fighter, a survivor, a role model, and a friend.

Soccer Time

It’s that time of the year when Parmelee Field is full of kids kicking the multi colored balls around the grounds.

During the week practices are commencing with kids ages 5 to 13.

Every Saturday morning till November 22 you can come out and watch the children play soccer in their new bright uniforms and support your local AYSO.

X-Mas In August

It was a small but festive group of ladies that gathered at the Terrace Room for a Christmas in August.

Barbara Jean played holiday melodies as everyone made Santa and elf ornaments.

Some of the women even came dressed in their holiday sweater to sport the idea that is was cold outside when in reality it was over 100 degrees.

The 50/50n was a rather large pot and the winner was Pat Lloyd.

Not only is next month a favorite of kids as they get free candy for dressing up, but will also be for the Social-Lites too.

October 23rd will be the Halloween Game Night bringing two popular themes as we get to dress up and play games.

Although you don’t have to be in costume to attend, it’s always fun to dress up and you’ll get an extra raffle ticket and possibly win a prize for best costume.

This spook-tacular night will commence at 6:30pm at the Terrace Room with some bewitching appetizers to compliment the night of fun and games.

Community Surprise

If someone said it takes a community to keep a secret, I would say no way. But, that is what happened for Bubba and Linda Williams 49th Wedding Anniversary surprise party.

Daughter and sons, Megan, Dean, Dusty and Mitchell only started planning a month before as Bubba and Linda were always too nosy for any kind of surprise.

With some help from close friends they had the couple believing they were going to attend their son’s friend wedding.

Much to their surprise, 135 people were waiting for them in the ballroom at the Clubhouse for a Fifties theme surprise party and they were very surprised.

“It was a community effort to keep this a secret, from Bob at the restaurant, friends and family and even the grandkids were in on this amazing event.” Megan told me.

Patriot Day

The National Day of Remembrance & Service was celebrated at the Silver Lakes Restaurant.

The Silver Lakes Association wanted to show their support and gratitude by hosting a free breakfast buffet to honor all the first responders and the community.

All that was requested of the residents was to wear red, white and or blue to show their respect on this day of remembering all the fallen.

“How do we expect the community to support us if we don’t support them.” Bob told me as he was flipping my omelet.

It was a nice crowd that were there for the right reasons, to celebrate and take time out of their day to eat some pancakes, eggs, biscuits and gravy and all the fixings with friends.

I was not surprised to see everyone in they’re patriotic colors. All donations went to the Senior Center which supports many local programs.

Gloomy Nights

Classic cars, live music, drinks, food and a bounce house!? What more do you need for “Hot August Night Pool Party.”

Earlier that day there was a pretty heavy storm with massive wind that warranted a few folks away. Even with the looming dark clouds circling over Silver Lakes, 397 dedicated locals could not be kept away. The ‘Silver Lakes

Sunsetters’ hot rods were shiny and tempting me to hop in one and go for a cruise, as the ‘Working Poets,’ jammed all night and everyone sipped on the no host bar and enjoyed pull pork sandwiches. So, clouds, winds, rain cannot keep this community from getting together and having a nice night.

Giving Back-Packs

You already know we live in a wonderful little community, but when someone goes out of their way to help our local kids, I have to share.

Heather Allgood put together a donation for money and or backpacks to give to kids who cannot afford new ones for school. That is a wonderful idea but Heather was not satisfied with just new back packs as she made sure each one was full of school supplies needed for the year, from pencils, paper, folders and more.

This community took it one step further and donated clothes and shoes of all sizes for Heather to hand out as well. Needless to say, her kitchen was a mini Target and her husband had to get take out for a few days as Heather and her kids sorted out clothes and stuffed back packs. “It is so great to empower a family going through a rough time and for them to know how many people out here care so much is just incredible,” Heather stated.

Thirty two kids started the school year feeling ready and will remember eveyone who paid it forward. Thank you Heather and everyone who donated as you did something truly selfless and amazing!

Red Hat Wonders

Thirty eight Silver Lakes Red Hat Society ladies met at Nancy Oswalds house for their quartely function.

Parasols and bumbershoots were part of the summer theme that was hosted by The Scarletts group. The food was catered by The Landing and some of the members brought some decadent desserts. Door prizes and even a most outrageous parasol prize was given. Everyone had a great time.

Each Red Hat Club meets separately each month with fun excursions such as movies, theatre, museums and other unique outings, but of course you have to be 50 and older.

Chamber Chatter

I would like to welcome one of our newest Chamber members, Jason Woodbury with If you have met Jason you would remember him, as he is one of the friendliest and energetic people I have met in awhile.

Jason has been in the energy efficiency business for 6 years as he sold his own company 1 year ago to relocate his family from his home place of Idaho. Married for almost ten years with four boys age ranging from 8 years to 4 months old, Jason is a devoted father and husband but also loves his work. Vivint has been in business for 15 years with no means of slowing down as the company just keeps growing in different areas of moving technology to the future.

When I asked Jason why he liked Helendale so much, he said because it reminds him of Idaho. He also said the people here are very friendly. Jason is eager to get to know everyone as he has already volunteered wherever he is needed from delivering food for “Meals on Wheels” to helping out at “Senior Outreach”. If you have not met Jason yet, give it time as he is becoming very involved in out wonderful community.

PTP – Party Time Parents

Bedtime curfew, alarms set, shopping done as it is that time again, end of summer and beginning of the school year.

Junior high orientation at Riverview was full of students looking for their friends and checking out their schedules to see if they all had class together. Some parents were ready for school to start that day and others had the look of where did the time go.

I myself have an 8th grader and then my little one starts kindergarten. I swear they both were just swaddled in their baby blankets I as I held them in my arms and now the house will be quiet.

It just amazes me how time goes by so fast as I am sad to see my boys off to school. I want to wish a safe and productive year to all students and thank the teachers now for all their hard work.

Silver Lakes Tragedy

I want to take a minute and give my condolences to two amazing families that lost their loved ones way too early.

Rob Limon was taken from his amazing wife, Sabrina, and their two children in a tragic senseless murder.

Exactly one week later, Steve Jaramillo and his wife, Lisa, crashed their motorcycle and he did not survive and Lisa has a broken back and a long emotional and physical road to recovery.

My heart goes out to both families that were taken too early and in tragic ways.
