The Hesperia Recreation and Park District’s 5th annual Cars, Cures and Kids took place on April 26 at Hesperia’s Civic Plaza Park.
The event kicked off the 24-hour Relay for Life walkathon, and the Over the Hill Gang club put on their annual classic car show.
Kids had an opportunity to win prizes, including some bicycles, throughout the day in observance of No Drugs America, which sponsored fundraisers geared towards the entire family.
The event started in 1997 with the Relay for Life, and as it grew over the years, several groups began working together to form one big event to raise money for causes.
Relay for Life is an event that raises money for the American Cancer Society research into cures and promotes education about prevention and early detection of the disease. At the May 3 event cancer survivors and their caregivers took the first walk around the track and at 9 p.m. a luminaria ceremony was held in remembrance of cancer victims.
The Apple Valley based Over the Hill Gang has participated in Cars, Cures & Kids since its inception and has raised thousands of dollars for the American Cancer Society, mostly by donating show entry fees. Classic car owners placed their 1975 and older entries for $15, and had the vehicles on public display with hopes of winning a trophy.
No Drugs America is a non-profit organization founded in 2000 by High Desert resident Frank Kelly. The goal is to stop drug and alcohol use by youngsters before it starts. He distributed information promoting his cause and arranged for San Bernardino County District Attorney Michael Ramos to be guest speaker.
