Renee Foss is a comedian, and also offers her services as a registered celebrant. She is trained to officiate at weddings, vow renewals, commitments, funerals, memorials, end-of-life tributes, survival-healing, and transition ceremonies which include divorce recovery and job loss.
She also just released a new book in December 2013. Entitled, Leaving Life Today? Tomorrow? Or Yesterday?, it is a humorous look at group of young men and young women who gather for a special dinner hosted by their friends. Their hosts Reuben and Margaret are a forward thinking husband and wife. With their eyes on the distant future, these young people ritualistically make a promise to themselves. Will anyone keep the promise? No matter. Relentlessly, each in his and her own time, they are all headed far and away. Get it at www.Amazon.com
Foss was specifically trained by the Celebrant Organization and Institute (www.celebrantinstitute.org) to acknowledge and celebrate life events that are important to people. Celebrancy is an established and flourishing movement that began in Australia and New Zealand in the 1970s. Celebrants respect all traditions and philosophies. They incorporate rituals that are important to a person’s background, or just because there are rituals which interest them.
The Celebrant Foundation and Institute educates Certified Life Celebrants in the art of celebration, symbolism and tradition to offer personalized ceremonies which mark the milestones in people’s lives . . . ceremonies that reflect the needs, beliefs and values of couples, individuals, and families. Celebrants are trained to officiate at weddings, vow renewals, commitments, funerals, memorials, end-of-life tributes, survival-healing, and transition ceremonies which include divorce recovery and job loss. She offers personalized ceremonies in Southern California.
The dictionary defines a hero as someone distinguished for exceptional courage, fortitude or bold enterprise. Who is someone’s hero? It could be Superman the fictional hero, or it could be Christopher Reeves whose personal heroism exceeded that of the Superman character he portrayed. A person’s hero could be any one of many life heroes. Or your hero could be their self.
Even if there has been no involvement in a “bold enterprise,” the living of each life requires – at the very least – a certain amount of courage and fortitude. For whatever occasion a person is considering having a ceremony, there is a story that is part of that decision. The primary service Foss offers is to listen to the story story – the significant moments of a person’s life journey. Together she helps that person decide how to share those moments in ceremony.
“The story” . . . the personal life journey which is unique to each soul is what attracted Foss to Celebrancy. “Sometimes we forget both happiness and challenge until we begin to share,” says Foss. “That is what I am here to do – capture the challenge and the happiness as they are remembered. I am here to represent in ceremony those events of a life that you will realize make you a hero.”
