The desert was hot, so it was time to head to the mountain communities for some cooler weather.
Big Bear Lake featured a chili cookoff and outhouse races dur- ing Old Miners Days on July 13. The chili cookoff featured a good variety of choices, with red, green and salsa varieties. A $5 tasting kit got visitors unlimited tastes at chili booths.
There were plenty of things to entertain the crowd. Kids could climb the rock wall or play in the bounce house. The stage featured a country band, and vendors sold food, drinks and products. The outhouse race was the big draw, with spectators lining both sides of the street. No one got run over this year, due to volunteers making sure Lookie “Loo’s” (pun intended) stood behind hay bales.
On the other side of the desert, is the mountain commu- nity of Wrightwood, which holds Mountaineer Days each year. This is a free, two-day family ori- ented festival featuring live mu- sic, handmade arts and crafts, a vendor village and food court, a parade, and old-fashioned games and contests for all ages.
